The Otter

Otters have long, thin bodies and short limbs, with webbed paws. Most have sharp claws on their feet, and all except the sea otter have long, muscular tails. Adult size is from 0.6 to 1.8 meters (2 to 6 ft) in length and 1 to 45 kilograms (2.2 to 100 lb) in weight. They have very soft, insulated underfur, which is protected by an outer layer of long guard hair. This traps a layer of air, and keeps them dry and warm under water. Many otters live in cold waters and have a high metabolism, so they can keep warm. For most otters, fish is what they eat most, such as crayfish and crabs as well as frogs. Otters are very active, chasing prey in the water or searching the beds of rivers, lakes or the seas. Most species live beside water, but river otters usually enter it only to hunt or travel, otherwise spending much of their time on land to avoid their fur becoming soaked. Otters are playful animals and appear to have various behaviors just for enjoyment, such as making waterslides and then sliding on them into the water.

How can we help?

I've gotten some request from you to advise HOW WE CAN HELP the environment. Well, here are few ways YOU CAN HELP:
  • Each spring there is a project being organized, it's called "Darom". People gather together to pick up trash and make our environment tidier and more beautiful. Here is a link to the "Darom 2013" website: http://geraidienai.lt/renginiai/1140/
  • If you don't feel like going out, you can help at home as well daily doing simple things like turning off water while brushing your teeth, take a quick shower instead of bath. This will help greatly b/c we won't waste water and dirty water won't get to the water-ways where fish and other animals might get poisoned.
  • Don't let helium filled balloons in the air b/c when they pop, they find their way on the ground and the balloon might confuse animals into thinking it's food.
If you have any suggestions or ideas how TO HELP, please send them to me and I'll post them to my blog.

The Eurasian Lynx

The Eurasian Lynx is a medium-sized cat. Which is found in Siberia, North Asia, South Asia and Europe. Even though it is not endangered at all in Eurasia, it is critically endangered in Lithuania. The Eurasian Lynx is the biggest of its species. They can grow from 80 to 300cm (31 to 51in). Males usually weigh from 18 to 30 kg (40 to 66 lb) and females weigh 8 to 21 kg (18 to 46 lb). The Eurasian Lynx preys for small to fairly big animals, for ex. hares, rabbits, mice, dormice, foxes, deer, reindeer and other animals. The Eurasian Lynx lives in a rugged forested area. This provides great opportunities for hideouts and a way to stalk prey. The Eurasian Lynx is a pretty tough predator. It can kill a 150 kg (330 lb) male deer.

What can we do to help endangered animals?

Now you might be wondering HOW CAN WE HELP ENDANGERED ANIMALS? Well if you were, here are some solutions:
  • Write an e-mail to organizations ex. www.panda.org.
  • Make a website/blog. If you want to make a website, here's an awesome free website maker, www.wix.com.
  • Make posters and promote the idea of supporting endangered animals.
  • If big organizations like WWF don't work, you could just try to talk to your county officials, or mayor.
You also might be thinking, WHY SHOULD I HELP?
  • In a few years your country could be known as a baren wasteland with no animals.
  • Some endangered animals could go extinct
Don't make the mistake. Only YOU can make the change.

The Wisent

The Wisent (also known as the European Bison) is like a Bison just that the Wisents tail and body is a little bit bigger and longer. Wisents are found in the southern parts of Lithuania and surrounding countries. The chart at the top states that the species of animal is  "vulnerable".  Did you know that the Wisent is the heaviest surviving animal in the entire Europe? They can weigh from 300 to 920 kilograms, and sometimes, but very rarely they can grow up to 1000kg! Well guys that's it for today. I am sorry this blog was so short, I just didn't have time to write it this week, but I promise that next week I will post a longer blog and maybe even extra content. Thanks for reading!!! :)

The Pond Bat

Pond Bats are located in the area of red

The Pond Bat is one of the many endangered animals in Lithuania. I will be posting this type of blog each week and each week there will be a different animal (all of these animals are endangered in Lithuania). So, moving on. The Pond Bat (in the summer) nests in a lowland places like woods or meadows with little ponds of water in that area. In the winter they usually nest in the mountains. These species are dying out fast. I will probably put a chart or something on the left. The Pond Bat is one of the largest bats in Europe. The length of its body is 51 - 73 mm and weight 10.5 - 28.5 g. The Pond Bat hunts in the early morning and late at night. That's it for the Pond Bat. Thanks for reading! :)
